NewFrac Project

Cubicoff Ingeniería Abierta participates in the H2020 NEWFRAC project, which consists of a doctoral program on the calculation and analysis of microfractures with a duration of 36 months. In this program, students will have intersectoral and international training in leading laboratories and companies throughout Europe.

NEWFRAC is the first coordinated initiative in the European Union whose objective is the systematic progress in the prediction of failures in heterogeneous systems through a novel computational framework through the integration of Finite Fracture Mechanics and Phase Field modeling strategies.

The potential impact of this modeling and simulation framework on the design of heterogeneous materials and structures can be enormous, for example in a weight reduction of around 10% over current design concepts, increasing strength/weight ratios. and stiffness/weight.

Project objectives:

The main objective of the NEWFRAC network is the development of a new modeling and simulation framework for the optimization of the fracture mechanics of high-level technological products, which involve heterogeneous systems (materials and structures), which are used in fields of strategic scientific and social impact engineering, ranging from renewable energy production systems to biological hard tissues.

This main objective will be achieved through two specific objectives:

To take a significant step in the key questions of the MFF and the CF, which allows to develop general computational tools capable of solving complex fracture problems described above.
Contrast these computational tools with fracture problems in the real world and obtain truly predictive tools that are robust, reliable and efficient, and therefore useful in strategic industrial sectors.

Training:

To achieve these objectives, NEWFRAC will support 13 early-stage researchers (ESRs) who will be trained to carry out innovative fracture modeling research, and with the participation of interdisciplinary academic and industrial activities.

The transfer of knowledge to the industrial sectors will take place through close cooperation (each ESR will work for at least 4 months in a non-academic sector) with five business leaders in high technology and interested in the developments and results of this network. , among which is Cubicoff.

The project, which was launched in May 2020 and will end in April 2024, is led by seven internationally recognized research groups and experts in the field of solid and fracture mechanics, with the University of Seville at head. During this time, Cubicoff has collaborated with his business expertise by providing training in negotiation, leadership and effective communication, among others, and will soon welcome one of the researchers from China to work at the company.

NEWFRAC is committed to high-level training for a new generation of creative researchers, entrepreneurs and early-stage innovators (ESRs) through the development and engineering applications of a new modeling framework focused on the prediction and analysis of phenomena fracture in multiple fields. From our company we wish the 13 researchers much success in the program.
