Cubicoff, a Spanish engineering company with years of experience in fire protection systems for the mining sector, has been awarded the SAFE-MINING project focused on improving safety protocols in the mining industry. The full title of the project is “SAFEty Assessment on Fire Protection systems in the MINING Processes.”
The SAFE-MINING project will be carried out within the E-LIX pilot plant for mineral processing at Atalaya / Lain Tech in Riotinto, Huelva. This pilot plant will innovate with green technology owned by the SME Lain Tech to extract strategic raw materials (Cu, Zn, Co, and PGMs) from low-grade minerals. It is led by the consortium partners Atalaya and Lain Tech and is integrated into the European project I4Green.
SAFE-MINING focuses on implementing intelligent solutions for fire protection systems using advanced simulation tools. Its main objective is to develop a comprehensive methodology for simulations and calculations that enhance the detection, prevention, and extinguishing of fires in mining environments. This includes advanced simulations of fire scenarios, risk analysis based on simulated data, simulation of extinguishing strategies, testing and optimization of extinguishing systems, and the generation of detailed reports based on the conducted simulations, complying with rigorous European Union safety regulations.
Atalaya is a mining and development company producing copper in Riotinto, southwest Spain, with exceptional management. The mine processes approximately 15 million tons of ore annually to produce 250,000 tons of concentrate (yielding 55,000 tons of copper). Atalaya initiated the project in 2015, and since then, the mine has become a driving force for the region, contributing to the socio-economic revitalization of the Riotinto Mining Basin.
Lain Tech is a young company dedicated to the research, development, and industrial implementation of new electrochemical technologies, providing cutting-edge solutions for the mining and renewable energy sectors. Lain Tech has developed a hydrometallurgical solution for the extraction of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, lead, and precious metals, known as the E-LIX project.
